This is one of the most ecologically friendly projects we have been involved with. The simple attribute of high performance means that the wind is our primary source of propulsion in all wind conditions, but that’s just the start. This design has electric engines that run on high performance batteries that are charged every time the cat sails. In simple terms; the propellers rotate when sailing and charge the batteries. Having a high performance cat means that the loss of speed while regenerating is much less of an impact. It has been shown that the loss of performance while sailing amounts to about 1.5 knots of boat speed. Fortunately this is a very high performance vessel and the cost in overall sailing pleasure is minimal. Even when at anchor the batteries are continually charging thanks to the optional solar panel array. Although we do have twin generators onboard this vessel to cover every situation, we calculate that it is possible to achieve a 60% reduction in fossil fuel usage (dependant on overall electricity consumption's). The entire electric propulsion system has been designed by Dave Tether. |
